I think I may have gotten slightly further. Log attached.

Here were the pertinent env variables:

LIBGUESTFS_TRACE=1
LIBGUESTFS_QEMU=/home/ubuntu/qemu/qemu.wrapper
SUPERMIN_KERNEL=/boot/vmlinuz-3.4.0-030400-generic
