Unfortunately, I've discovered this patch doesn't work on AMD64.
Also, the errors there made me realise that in a sense it only works
by accident on i386 and powerpc: this method imports non-fPIC code
from libc.a into a shared library, which certainly isn't guaranteed to
work.
I'll need to think a bit harder about this (although for now, I think
it's still more robust than the old version, we'll just need to
disable it for AMD64).
