Sure you do: you use them every time you compile a changed library
version, to make sure that those four applications still build and
link correctly.  Anyone who's having to recompile the library often
enough that apps link time is an issue probably is a valuable source
of regression testing.

Of course, our valuable source of regression testing *should* be
official regression tests and unit tests that get automatically run on
nightly builds.  But at the moment we've even let the current limited
test suite get a little out of date...

Go ahead and add the configure option, though; just leave it on by
default at least when --enable-everything is used.
