Thank you!  Sorry about the hassle; I don't build with SLEPc by
default myself, and there's been a bit of a hardware delay with the
big cluster we're setting up for more intensive regression testing.
"libMesh trunk doesn't compile with setting X" is always a worthwhile
error to report - if I'm in the middle of a big change I try to commit
it atomically in chunks that keep all intermediate versions working.
(emphasis on "try to", obviously...)

I split off that version number test into a new slepc_macro header,
included from libmesh.C as well as the slepc interface code.  Would
you see if that fixes it?
