More than "some".  I believe you have to ask for thread safety when you compile 
mpich2... and I'm sure others are similar.  I've never turned it on because I 
figured it would be a performance drain without any gain since I'm probably the 
only person in my whole company that writes threaded MPI code.... and I don't 
make errors ;-)
