I think I put in a libmesh_assert() when I noticed this myself
yesterday.  Your solution is better.

I'm still looking at those save files, by the way.  I'm afraid it's
possible that they were corrupted when written by the libHilbert
bug... I'll let you know either way once I'm sure.
