I think creating directories should be the default...  we already do this by
default in our codes.... it's just what users expect.  Very rarely would you
really want it to throw an error (the only good thing I can see about that
is it would catch mispellings like ~/resylts/out.e but I don't think that
happens often enough for it to be the default).
