Assuming this is still broken in r4257 (and I can't see why it
shouldn't be, although I also can't see how r4246 would have caused a
runtime problem in the first place...):

Can you verify that these errors go away if you revert only the
variant_filter_iterator.h file to r4245?

These look like namespace issues --- if I change libmesh_cast_ptr to
