Seems reasonable, I'll give it a shot but we may want to consider applying 
these patches if the answer for whatever reason is "no".

I'd be very interested in that tool.  In fact regardless of how the exodus 
patch goes, we'll be producing a different "mapped" id when we rollout the 
configurable subdomain_id patch right?  On way or another we are going to have 
to change IDs in all of our libMesh generated meshes...
