What about changing the way we store examples altogether?  Maybe we should do 
something like:

examples/beginning/ex01
examples/adaptivity/ex01
examples/transient/ex01
examples/femsystem/ex01
examples/infinite_elements/ex01
examples/reduced_basis/ex01

etc….

The example numbers are starting to get a bit out of control…
