Yeah, no kidding - if there's no complicated metadata and no
likelihood of format changes then forget what I said about HDF5,
reading and writing a bunch of identical vectors to xda/xdr will be
trivial.

We'll save the HDF5 for the next time we do something fancy enough to
require a change to our main I/O format.
