Sure, will try that next, although I claim the stack trace will be no more 
illuminating ;-)

Yeah... with -g in optimized mode my stack trace looks exactly the same as 
without -g for this example.  Let me try a debug mode build instead... is the 
preferred method for doing that to set the METHOD variable in the shell, or to 
pass it to configure as in the above example?
