At present we are all running the same version of the autotools, the source 
being located in ./contrib/autotools. Look at bootstrap itself of you'd like to 
build them. 

Now I'm not going to defend this as a solution. There was a fair amount of 
discussion recently about checking in generated files at all, and for now we 
are. And I have enjoyed them being there recently when git cloned onto an sgi 
ice with a crusty automake. 

Ultimately, I think we may move to a slightly different git usage model where 
all work is done on a shared devel branch, and it is periodically merged into 
master. This would allow the generated files to live only in master, and avoid 
this annoyance.
