I haven't checked the in tree build yet with the new nemesis etc, but unless 
Jed opted in that's probably not a problem. 

I have added a flag inside libmesh-config that indicates whether its been 
installed yet or not, but haven't done anything with it yet. I figured we'd 
need that to get moose working without doing make install, but apparently John 
had it working anyway?

I'm hopefully snowboarding for the next two days but will investigate the 
in-tree new exodus stuff when I get back.
