And a no-op won't work, but something almost as simple - looping through the 
input range and assigning an incremental counter - should:

index_map.clear();
dof_id_type idx=0;
for (ForwardIterator::it=begin, it!=end; ++it)
  index_map.push_back(idx++);
return;

would be the "right" way to turn this into a no-op…
