But "make check" dies when I try it manually, and when I can finally
get the problem to manifest in gdb the segfault is in nothing to do
with fparser; it looks like your typical "dangling pointer scribbled
on memory elsewhere" eldritch horror.

I'm looking through the code now, though; and I think I may have found
the problem.  Watch the commit logs to see if I'm right...
