Good news, everyone!
Libmesh compiles and make check passes on OSX 10.9 with just this one
change.
Everything also still works on the pre-Mavericks and Ubuntu machines I have
available here.
So I think I'll merge this into master now and let the various buildbots
take a shot at it... please let me know if anything fails.
