I've got some stuff in a private repo that's working on simple
problems, getting extended to arbitrary physics, and should be
publicly releaseable next year.  Sorry for the hassle; trying to get a
proposal funded.  I hereby forgive you guys for the foot-dragging on
open source MOOSE licensing.  ;-)

I'm not sure that our definition of "going nuts" and yours would
match, though.  I think my ideas are quite impressive, but "backend
template metaprogramming out the wazoo" and "requires some C++1y
support" might be showstoppers for you.
