Despite my previously registered objection; I’m getting soft in my
old age and am OK trying it for a while in trunk and see if we get
any complaints about the alternatives...

Let's definitely give it a try.  The expected hassle of having to
remember to bootstrap manually when appropriate would (for me at
least) probably be much less than the already-experienced hassle of
having to explain to users what to do about an obscure autotools error
message, which itself isn't nearly as serious a problem as the
disappointment of losing users who might hit the same problem but not
bother to ask about the fix.
