I am not aware of a general VTK_LIB.
As far as I know vtk projects use Cmake and need a VTKConfig.cmake
somewhere to read such variables from.

In my view any path is fine as default, since there really isn't a
default (cmake generally installs in /usr/local/... by default).
So specifying on the command line at configure is the way forward.
