There is actually a third way.  You can use PetscNonlinearSolver (or  
NOXNonlinearSolver for Trilinos) directly.... supplying functions to  
compute the residual and jacobian.

There isn't yet an example of doing it this way (there should be....  
Ben... do you have that worked up yet... or do you want me to work it  
up from your adaptation of Laplace-Young?)... but it's not too hard to  
figure out... just take a look at the interface for  
PetscNonlinearSolver.
