Both tests that you suggest are less easy to perform than you might 
think.  I virtually can't compile MeVisLab myself, because it's too 
large.  We have a so-called nightly build system where the complete 
application is built every night.  32-bit, on the other hand, is 
difficult because on my desktop computer some libraries for that are 
missing.  A few days ago, I fizzled out trying to compile a simple 
hello-world program in 32-bit mode.  Ubunut 9.04 seems to not supply 
all the required things for that.

Nevertheless, you are still right that changing the _n_v_comp 
mechanism would certainly not save much memory.  Also, I'm currently 
already working on a different application, so I'll just forget about 
that problem for a while and think about it later (when it might be 
even more difficult to re-capture what has happend, though).
