We do this with MOOSE (whih is built on libMesh)... Including having
the ability to directly utilize Fortan Abaqus umats with our nonlinear
mechanics system... however our code is not currently open sourced.

You might still be able to get it... email me directly if you're
interested and I'll send you more info.

However, this should let you know that it is possible to do it with
libmesh.  We have extremely complex material models (like crystal
plasticity fully coupled to several other PDEs) that we're solving
without issue using libMesh.

If you have any specific questions, I can probably help.  I think that
there is an example of doing linear elasticity in the libmesh examples
now... I would probably start there...
