LU should only take 1 (ish) linear iteration.

However, I still suspect that the issue here is that his Jacobian is
wrong... which accounts for the degraded nonlinear convergence.

Lorenzo: Have you double checked your Jacobian statements?  Have you
checked them against your friend doing FEAP?  Your statements should look
very similar to theirs...
