Can you build and link against libmesh with METHOD=devel or, preferably, 
METHOD=dbg? Either of those will turn on asserts in libmesh and hopefully which 
you will hopefully trip instead of just a default. Right now you're linking 
against libmesh in opt mode and the segfault may be triggered much later than 
the actual problem.
