I just verified the log files at FreeFem++’s webpage and the files of the newly 
installed version. It’s the second option - their program still comes with 
their own copy of MPICH and PETSc, but they (fortunately!) changed the files 
location to /usr/local/ff++/. So, this should’t be a problem anymore.
