Those GCC and MPICH versions should be OK, but I have not tested them in
conjunction with software obtained via homebrew.

You might also try a "barebones" libmesh build that only uses your
hand-built GCC and mpich.  If that works, you could start adding homebrew
packages back in until you find on that causes the crashes.
