I would not try 1M dofs with a direct solver.  Saving an incomplete
Cholesky factorization would probably still be a big win.

There's a LinearSolver::reuse_preconditioner() method which can tell
libMesh whether it should reuse or recompute a preconditioner on
subsequent solves, and the PetscLinearSolver respects that flag.  I
don't think we have decent test coverage on this though so I'd not
trust it completely; run with all the PETSc info-printing options on
at first.
