I don't know what the issues are with the old version, but I don't mind
upgrading either.

I'll ask though - it does not seem to make much sense to have externally
maintained source files in our version control tree. Maybe we could remove
these, and have the bootstrap script install these files from a pristine
source, like possibly /usr/share/gnulib/lib/getopt.c or something ?
This would mean that gnulib must be installed on the computer where
bootstrap is run. The tar.gz release files would not have that dependancy
though. Or, there might be other projects we can depend on, I'm not stuck
on gnulib, in fact I have never used it so far.

I dont have the time or inclination to deal with this, but I'd be open
to such changes if someone does.
