Maybe not the whole western world. But I get the idea anyway.
You're right. The politically 'protected' get PROTECTED.  

Don't know what we can really do to get out of this cesspool!  I
keep trying to do what I can, but after all, I only got 810 votes
in the last election, so most likely the voters seem to be scared
shitless that the Democrats or Republicans might not win!  What
king of a national issue is that, anyway?

This cesspool was created by both the Democrats and Republicans. 
Certainly there are other choices around, they just aren't heard.
Largely by design.  At the local level, I can't say that.  I was
given pretty good coverage most of the time, and I still lost
horribly.

So. The status quo continues. At least for now.
