I would have to concur with some of your findings above. There was a time,
not that many years ago, when Hunter S. and I wrote to one another
infrequently, mostly about writing and the 60's experiences we shared. We
both agreed that when or if the time came that we couldn't write any more,
it would be better to leave the world than live in it without writing. 

He and I had shared our views in e-mail on several occasions about the
runaway mentality present in law enforcement, if not the federal
government. Ironically, one of his best friends, the Pitkin County
Colorado Sheriff, paid him the ultimate compliment when he said that
Thompson wrote clearly about life on the edge, and those of us who live
far back from the edge should never question the vision(s) he had.
