Do you remember the hostility generated in the Goldwater campaign in the mid-1960s? I would suggest much civility was involved on the socialist side against Goldwater, although I would suggest that the Goldwater campaign was far more civil than Johnson's was at the time. And then there is the notion that many have today that there is no left or right at least in terms of defining which side really comes down on the side of limited government any more. Probably the last major Administration to even give lip service to that ideal was Ronald Reagan during his first term in office. It is difficult to differentiate even how it might be possible to ascertain whether a John Kerry administration would have differed a great deal from the fascist regime we currently have in place (and growing exponentially) today. But that's a separate issue.
