Micru, I'm not sure what you mean by edition IDs. However, I see the work IDs as yet another way to unify pages about the same work that appear in the various language wikis. I like the "first edition" information in the info box. The edition infobox contains valuable information for the history of the work in that language - and it attempts to identify the first instance of the work, which I think is good history. Adding the work ID to *wikidata* would provide one of those cross-language connectors that wikidata is working to achieve. So I see the workID as an additional identifier, possibly in the list of authorities at the bottom of the page.

Because there is more than one workID for any given book (e.g. Librarything, OPen Library, and others have or are developing WorkIDs) we should come up with a solution that can handle them all and future ones.

Hi Merrilee,

That is wonderful! Will there be a way to convert edition IDs into work
IDs?

At some point the book infobox should be modified to show both work and
edition info, so it is definitely useful to get ready for that.

Do you plan to run bots to import these identifiers?

Cheers,
Micru

    Hi all,____

Some of you have known about this project which has been in the
works for some time – works IDs. For those of you who did know about
it, they have been released. Huzzah!____

    __ __

    http://www.oclc.org/developer/develop/linked-data/worldcat-entities.en.html
    ____

For those of you who are scratching your heads and wondering why
this is important or how it might be useful, I offer you a great
    example:____

    __ __

    ____

    __ __

Right now, the convention in InfoBox Book, etc. is to note the ISBN
and other IDs associated with the first edition of a work. Although
this is useful, in an information retrieval context it is not as
useful as it might be – adding one or more work IDs to the mix would
be useful because the work ID can bring back more information about
editions published in different locations, on different dates, etc. ____

I’m curious to hear what you think. Are these identifiers useful in
the Wikimedia world? Right now OCLC numbers are used, as are VIAF
    ids, and Dewey numbers. ____
