Sorry for asking such a stupid question, luckily I figured it out and the
answer was pretty simple: just need to check out the hardware description -
of a specific revision of a model of router device that you are looking for
: if a switch function is not provided by the main SoC, and there is a
separate switch controller onboard for this function.

OpenWRT website has a pretty good hardware descriptions. From them I
learned that TP-WR841N(D) revisions v5, v7, v8, v9 do not have a separate
managed switch controller, this function is done by the main SoC.
Meanwhile, WNDR3800 has a RTL8366SR switch controller made by Realtek.
Although its probably improving the performance of a router (because less
work for the main SoC), Realtek is famous for being hostile towards
opensource just like Broadcom, and Realtek already has a history of
backdoors, so there could be a backdoor in this chip too... That, in
addition to not good price/quality ratio, makes WNDR3800 even less
attractive choice
