Example workbook to show error in range references in copy
When copying a sheet with named ranges, the target (copy) sheet should have its
range names adjusted to be relative within the sheet. As things stand now, the
copy's range names all refer to the original sheet, not the copy.
This matter is handled correctly in Excel.
An alternative treatment would be to offer the user a choice of alternatives
for the copy operation. This could be accomplished by allowing the absolute
reference operator ($) to be included or omitted in front of the sheet name.
Right now, it appears to make no difference whether the $ is omitted or
included - you will always get an absolute reference to the original sheet.
The attached workbook is one I made up for use in evaluating alternative
houses. I wanted to have one sheet for each house. Right now, if you copy the
only sheet to make a 2nd one, you get named range references in the second
sheet all referring back to the 1st sheet. Since the 2nd sheet will look very
similar to the first one, this could easily mislead all but the most
sophisticated users.
At present the best workaround I can think of is to use a separate workbook for
each house, which is awkward.
I can think of major problems that this error could cause for finance managers
and others evaluating alternative investments, especially since Excel does it
right.
