If you try the same thing with an ODBC, you should notice the same error. I don't know whether the JDBC connector does the same thing (from my recollection, it does, but I'm not 100% certain about that). So, not a bug in the connector, I think. You might want to open a bug report in general about not being able to set TINYINT UNSIGNED when using any mysql connection instead.
