You're right, Mike. The directions are perfect as they are. If I want to have
page 1 blank and page 2 say "2," the method given will do it. 

But there seems to be confusion about what is meant by "Starting with a defined
page number."

On the help page in question, one user writes: "I would like to number my pages
but I would like to start on page 2 but have it be numbered as page 1 for my
thesis. How do I do this?"

That's what I was trying to achieve as well (as were several other users who've
left comments on the page). If I'm not wrong, the directions given won't
accomplish that. 

So perhaps what's needed is two sets of directions for the two different tasks.
