The static tip on the Manage Names dialog might be a good idea in this case since the restriction to just letters is unclear. Btw, if you enter "a1", for example, in the Define Name dialog, the result is exactly as recommended. And when it comes to the explanation later: "a1" is not accepted because of the number but the length, which is not noted in the text.
