Thanks for your feedback/input. This reasoning is understandable, but for me
still leaves the question whether the proper way forward wouldn't still be to
improve the existing PDF viewers accordingly.

This is the right place when it comes to LibreOffice Viewer. (For missing
features in existing PDF viewers for Android, they should have their own issue
trackers, so I'd suggest requesting the missing features there as well.)
