Document with table as it currently exists

My 20-page 7-column table was created in MS Word 2007 XML then revised a
half-dozen times as a MS Word 97/XP DOC using LibreOffice Writer. No problems
editing, reformatting, or printing the table. But a week ago, I updated Writer
to versions 4.0.3.3. When I opened the table document, many cells and columns
were scrambled so that the document was worthless. Worst of all, the last
iteration of the document had been extensively edited. So I had to reconstruct
the whole thing. I converted the table to PDF then closed the DOC file. When
I reopened it again, it was rescrambled. Perhaps the 4.0.3.3 update changed
something? How can I recover my original document without hours more effort?
