Compatibility is prime and introducing a new feature in odf requires not only other applications to support it but also to provide import/export filter in other formats. Microsoft Powerpoint apparently also lacks on a presentation timer that could be the counter, or a count down, and even the time of day. Recommendation is always to use a macro, and ideally share it on the extensions site.
