Bug ID: 160793
Summary: saving document as template: with an "ignore content"
option | plus: templates / update 'this' template
method (instead of autoupdate)
Product: LibreOffice

OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium

hi,
just an idea...
What if we could save a document as template with an option: "ignore
content"...
which would mean, ignore anything typed, that is text in the body of the
document?
This would allow us to edit the template in WYSIWYG mode...
There could be a heading text in it, and the "h1" style would be visible...
there could be:
quotation, different styles, several...
Body Text, and other styles...
all in "real" / actual format...
.... advantages:
Editing the template would be super easy!!
just compare:
now: you select a style... say, "h1" (Heading 1) in the styles (Alt +2)
but you have to be cautious, not to apply it to the invisible first
line... also... you can only see what it will look in the preview section
"quick lazy fox"...
after the enhancement:
you could leave the "Heading 1" text in the document...
and see it in "real time".. in its actual format... in the body of the
document (which is way-way better than the brown fox)
you could have several styles "shown" like this...
so, editing could start with placing the cursor in the text...
instead if looking it up in the list...
....
I haven't been thinking much about this yet... but it seems like a simple
thing.. with great benefits...
....
another POSSIBLE (future) advantage:
you're working on a document... you edit the style...
and save the document as that template, thus updating all documents ...
(okay, this won't work... you can't overwrite templates, you can't even see the
templates list when you're saving a document as template :( :( --
unfortunately )
"autoupdate" is IMHO a very bad function... almost makes sure you one day scr*
up something without knowing
BUT maybe there could be a new way of doing this:
File / Templates / ... "update 'this' template"
which could update the template that the current document is based on...
in a "save a copy as" kind of manner... that is, without leaving the open
document...
