I think that's a different discussion? We had it ages ago when the three
options were added (show, hide, show for cells with bgcolor)

Good questions.
In any case, as it is now, the resulting behavior is very confusing.

Where please do you get that knowledge from?
I don't see any hint in Tools>Options... dialog, don't read it in the Help*...
