This is what MSO does (except the wider outline) and I would not be against this. However, this proposal would be a total departure from what Calc does. Calc has always had an overlay for the active cell and another for the selection, which is different from what you see in other spreadsheet applications. The existence of a wider active cell outline only made it more obvious.
