@Mark,

For anyone to be able to solve a problem, the problem has to be replicated. I
am a common user, just as you. I have tested the behavior you reported with LO
Calc on Windows, and I do not reproduce it.

I would like to kindly ask you to follow a few simple steps, in order to move
this report forward:

1. Save and close other documents and programs that are not related to this
test.
2. Start a new empty Calc spreadsheet.
3. In cell A1, type-in "Text" (without quotation marks).
4. Press the [ENTER] key on your keyboard.

4.1. At this point, the most common behavior is that the active cell is by now
cell A2, while the typed-in text is shown on cell A1.

5. Using the arrow keys of your keyboard, move the focus back to the prior cell
A1. If the conditions in the prior step ("4.1") were met in your case, then
pressing the "UP" arrow key in your keyboard should set cell A1 as the active
cell.

6. With cell A1 being the active cell, click on the icon that changes the font
color. The icon is a split button: clicking on the right-side down arrow that
is part of the icon would allow you to select a different color than the
current default ("Dark Red 2").

After following these steps, the font color of the content of cell A1 should be
changed according to the color you selected (in the above step 6). According to
your next comment, I might add some more steps for you to follow, in order to
find out what the problem could be (so it could be solved).

Do you see the Text within cell A1 being displayed with the selected font color
then?
