"B" is not a formula, it is a variable or symbol or character. Bug #65169 is likely to be a duplicate of this bug, but my comment (#1) there is relevant. Please provide a working example where a multi-character in-line formula cannot be typeset using Unicode text (i.e., requires a Formula frame) AND has uneccessary space within the frame.
