Yes, it is known, that there are problems with the visual editor. You should
set yourself to CC on those of the mentioned bug reports, that fit best to your
problem. I don't know whether it is planned the change the default to not use
the visual editor.

You can use version 24.2. or 24.8. After you have installed it and before using
any file with Math equations, start a new Math Formula document. Go to Tools >
Options > Math > Settings and uncheck the option "Enable visual editing".

You can install a new version parallel to your regular version (instruction in
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Installing_in_parallel) or use a portable
version (currently 24.2.3 from
https://portableapps.com/apps/office/libreoffice_portable). That way you can
test, whether the above described way works for you. Or do it the other way
round, make a 24.2 or 24.8 your regular installation and use a parallel
installed or a portable version 7.6 for documents with Math equations. Always
test on a copy of the document!
