Thank you! I installed the libreoffice-gtk-gnome package (debian sid) and that
seems to have solved the issue!

I was not at all aware of having to install toolkit(?)-specific packages... Now
indeed I have VCL: gtk3 :

Version: 24.2.5.2 (X86_64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 420(Build:2)
CPU threads: 12; OS: Linux 6.10; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); UI: en-US
Debian package version: 4:24.2.5-4
Calc: CL threaded

(As you can see, I had also tried installing OpenCL drivers and enabling that
in LibreOffice, but that alone did not make a difference. But then came back to
this issue and saw your note about the VCL, and that seems to have fixed it...
