Additional information: if you cut the selected word (but not pressing the
backspace or delete key), an additional space will be removed. I think this is
also part of the smart space handling mechanism, which should be given an
option to be disabled.

Furthermore, the smart space handling mechanism cannot handle words at the
beginning or end of a paragraph (without trailing punctuation marks). So
copying the first or the third "hello" in Comment 19 will not trigger the
described behavior.
