Bug ID: 163732
Summary: Text entries like "1/2" or "1/4" typed into a cell are
recognized as Unicode symbols rather than dates or
numerical fractions in LibreOffice Calc.
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 24.8.2.1 release
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Calc
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
When typing text in LibreOffice Calc, the application interprets the text to
its internal data structure. However, there appear to be inconsistencies in how
similar text entries are interpreted. Here are some examples:
1. Entries like "1/1", "1/3", and "1/5" are typically recognized as dates
(month/day format), while "1/2" and "1/4" are interpreted as Unicode characters
(½ and ¼).
2. This inconsistency also affects numerical fractions. For instance, "1 1/2"
and "1 1/4" are converted to strings like "1 ½" and "1 ¼", whereas other
similar entries are recognized correctly as fractions.
It appears to be a long-standing bug; I was able to reproduce it on versions
24.8.2.1 and 7.3.7.2 on Ubuntu. And 24.8.2.1 on macOS.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open LibreOffice Calc.
2. Type "1/2", "1/3", "1/4", and "1/5" in different cells, respectively.
3. Type "1 1/2", "1 1/3", "1 1/4", and "1 114514/111" in different cells,
respectively.
Actual Results:
1. "1/2" -> Text("½"), "1/3" -> Date(01/03/24), "1/4" -> Text("¼"), "1/5" ->
Date(01/05/24)
2. "1 1/2" -> Text("1 ½"), "1 1/3" -> Fraction(1 1/3), "1 1/4" -> Text("1 ¼")
Expected Results:
1. "1/2" -> Date(01/02/24), "1/3" -> Date(01/03/24), "1/4" -> Date(01/04/24),
"1/5" -> Date(01/05/24)
2. "1 1/2" -> Fraction(1 1/2), "1 1/3" -> Fraction(1 1/3), "1 1/4" ->
Fraction(1 1/4)
Reproducible: Always
